The Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon

GRANTS PASS, OR

How does a mature park, become the setting for exceptional play-based learning? That's the question that faced The Children's Museum of Southern Oregon's (TCMSO) at their new Grants Pass building, which allowed the museum to convert an existing, under-used park into the museum's new outdoor learning space. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, MxM conducted site analyses to identify strategic opportunities and then worked with TCMSO staff to define the overall site program. Over a series of conversations, our team sited key outdoor elements to minimize utility expenses, protect existing trees, and create iconic open-ended play spaces that work well for both the in-house pre-school and museum visitors throughout all four seasons. The team focused on the ability to adapt and be opportunistic as the framework plan is implemented. In this vision, community organizations will be able to continuously contribute to the learning and play offerings in various ways through donated jet boats, sponsored green houses, and repurposed construction equipment.
